A Letter to My Son On His Birthday...

Avery Michael,

Today is your second birthday. In my eyes, you are now officially a toddler. In my heart, though, you will always be my baby boy. 

In these past two years, I have watched you grow and change so much. You have overcome so many struggles already, and although you may not know it yet, those struggles have all made you a much stronger person. Since before you were even born, you have been a fighter, which is a quality that runs deep in your roots, and it is something that you should always be proud of. You are our little warrior.



No one will ever be as proud of you, though, as your father and I are. You have developed such an amazing personality, and you are incredibly smart. You always find enjoyment in the simple things in this world, and you truly have a heart of gold. You have a heart SO big, that you are not afraid to show kindness and love to everyone you meet. I pray that is something you never lose as you grow older, because this world needs more of that kindness, and more of that love. 

 I do not know what this new year will bring for you, but I hope and pray that it is all good things. I do know that there will be new adventures, and lots of new experiences waiting for you. I will also make sure that there will be lots more cuddle time, because I need to get all of the cuddles while I still can. If there was a way for me to slow down time, right now is when I would do it. You may be changing each day as you grow, but my love for you will always and forever stay the same.

Long Days and Sleepless Nights

I apologize that the blog has been quiet since my last post. Things have been a bit hectic and stressful around here, with lots of changes that we have been trying to settle into. Avery likes routine, and when things change, it doesn’t always work out too well.   At the end of September, Avery got his sixth cast put on. He did an awesome job at the appointment, and adjusted very well. Thankfully we have not run into any issues while in this cast. Dr Glotzbecker said that now with Avery being over the age of two, he can go a little longer in his casts, which is great because that means less exposure to the anesthesia. His next cast change is scheduled for December 3rd, with a cast removal on November 30th. Hopefully I can keep him healthy until then. So far I haven’t had much luck with that, though, as the flu has slowly been making its way around the house multiple times.  Last month, Avery started his ABA services. Happy 4th of July!

This past week was our first family vacation. We spent the week sightseeing around Plymouth, and brought the kids to the beach down at the Cape. It was Avery's first time ever at the beach, and it didn't go exactly how I had imagined it. I imagined he would have been throwing the sand around, helping his sister build sandcastles and splashing in the water. Complete opposite. He screamed and cried when we put him anywhere near the water, and he screamed and cried when we put him in the sand. Eventually I was able to get him to sit on my lap, while I sat in the sand, and he threw the sand on my legs...the joys of being a mom. I was happy, though, that he at least was able to get his first beach experience before starting his casting treatments. Despite that part of the trip, we all had a really nice time, and made some great memories.                                              As mentioned before, once that cast is on, our outdoor fun will be limited. Walk a Mile In These Shoes...

Today was not one of our best. Avery really struggled during his therapy sessions, and at the end, after everyone had left, he just shut down and tuned out the world. He wasn't tired, he wasn't hungry, he wasn't just being a toddler. He needed to be alone and quiet the chaos in his mind and throughout his body. This has only happened a few other times, at least that I can remember noticing, but he never really isolated himself in this way those times. It was heartbreaking to see him like this. I wanted nothing more than to comfort him, but he wouldn’t even let me talk to him, never mind hug him. He eventually just curled up on the chair, asked for his tablet, and zoned out while watching cartoons.  I felt helpless and didn’t know what to do. I didn’t like seeing him this way.
