Cast Break/Cast #2

As you may have already seen, Avery's first cast removal was on Friday. He had some slight bruising on his hips and back, and his skin was very dry and flaky, but overall everything looked good. The dry skin healed after one good bath and lots of Aveeno eczema treatment lotion, and the bruising faded by the end of the weekend. Although we didn't do anything real exciting, it was still a fun break. Avery was extra lovable and wanted lots of cuddles. It got me thinking of how hard it must be for him to want comfort and hugs from us, but he can't even feel our arms around him with the cast in the way. As resilient as they may be, our little ones are still affected by these treatments, even if they don't always show it.

Freedom!!!

When he wasn't looking for extra loving from all of us, he was running around the house like a wild animal, acting silly, dancing, and playing like I have never seen him play before. We loved watching every second of it, but the thought of casting day #2 being right around the corner was always in the back of our minds no matter how hard we tried not to think of it.

Forever my baby boy

Like always, the weekend flew by. This morning we were up bright and early at 4am to head back to Boston. The procedure went a lot faster this time around. His appointment was scheduled at 7:30, and we were out of there no later than 10:30. Since he didn't have any issues the last time, they didn't need to keep him there long for monitoring. Once he was awake, and they took a few readings of his vitals to make sure everything was good, we were free to go.

He slept the whole ride back, and once we were home he was ready to play. I tried to get him to rest, because he was still not able to walk too well from the anesthesia, but Avery just wasn't having it. Typical boy! By dinner time, he was pretty much back to being himself, appetite and all. He is still a bit cranky and irritated with having another cast, but I know it won't take him long to adjust again.

The next cast removal will be scheduled for December. We were really hoping to get a cast break for Christmas, but since the holiday is on a Monday, that wouldn't work out. Oh well. Cast or no cast, it will still be a fun time as always.

I just want to take a minute to say thank you to all of the staff, doctors and nurses at Boston Children's Hospital. They are all amazing, and treat our little ones as if they were their own children. This time of year, Walmart does their fundraiser for the Children's Miracle Network. Family and friends in Massachusetts, if you happen to be shopping at your local Walmart, and they ask you if you would like to make a donation, even if it's just a penny...Do it!! The money they raise goes to Boston Children's Hospital. That hospital goes above and beyond for the kids, and they deserve the help and recognition for all of their hard work, love, and dedication. Thank you.

Waiting for cast #2
